EID Fellows

This multi-institutional training program prepares laboratory scientists for careers in public health. The Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) cooperate in sponsoring Emerging Infectious Disease (EID) fellows at laboratories across the country. The Wadsworth Center hosts APHL/CDC fellows, and supports additional applicants through the Wadsworth Center Emerging Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program. In the last 14 years, 55 pre- and post-doctoral fellows have been trained in Wadsworth's facilities in Albany, New York.

The Wadsworth Center offers a unique training opportunity for those interested in confronting the challenges of emerging infectious diseases. As the research-intensive public health laboratory of the New York State Department of Health, the Wadsworth Center combines clinical reference laboratories with externally supported investigations across the biomedical sciences. EID fellows have worked on basic and applied research projects including: food microbiology, rabies virus diagnostics, pathogenesis of West Nile virus, molecular diagnostics for potential bioterrorist agents, vector genetics, and influenza virus research, to name a few.
