The caliciviruses are a family of viruses (Caliciviridae) that is composed of 4 genera. Caliciviruses in the genuses Norovirus and Sapovirus infect the gastrointestinal tract in humans. Several names have been used to refer to these viruses in the past. Viruses in the genus Norovirus have previously been referred to as small round structured viruses (SRSV), Norwalk virus, and Norwalk-like viruses (NLVs). Classic caliciviruses, Sapporo virus, and Sapporo-like viruses (SLVs) have been names used in the past for sapoviruses.
