Aerobic Bacteriology
This unit performs the following:- Identification and serological typing of clinical aerobic and facultative bacteria
- Antimicrobial susceptibility confirmation testing
- Testing of fecal specimens and food samples for S. aureus from foodborne/waterborne outbreaks
- S. aureus enterotoxin testing for clinical and foodborne illness.
- Isolation and identification of Bordetella pertussis and Legionella species.
- Detection of B. pertussis by PCR from primary specimens
- Serological typing of Legionella.
- Detection of Legionella species by PCR on environmental water samples
- Screening of clinical specimens for N. gonorrhoeae; identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing of N. gonorrhoeae
- Culture of C. trachomatis (approval required before submission)
- Some organisms are identified using molecular techniques and/or cellular fatty acid analysis
