Aerobic Bacteriology

This unit performs the following:
  • Identification and serological typing of clinical aerobic and facultative bacteria
  • Antimicrobial susceptibility confirmation testing
  • Testing of fecal specimens and food samples for S. aureus from foodborne/waterborne outbreaks
  • S. aureus enterotoxin testing for clinical and foodborne illness.
  • Isolation and identification of Bordetella pertussis and Legionella species.
  • Detection of B. pertussis by PCR from primary specimens
  • Serological typing of Legionella.
  • Detection of Legionella species by PCR on environmental water samples
  • Screening of clinical specimens for N. gonorrhoeae; identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing of N. gonorrhoeae
  • Culture of C. trachomatis (approval required before submission)
  • Some organisms are identified using molecular techniques and/or cellular fatty acid analysis
